Forty women participated in the second 110-plus Tennis Event. The qualifying rules: Each duo had to have a combined age of at least 110 years, with one 70 or older.
The Friends of Tennis hosted the second 110-plus tennis event Saturday, April 2, at the Palm Coast Tennis Center. More than 40 women competed in the tournament. It was a fun day of tennis, with one catch: Each pair’s age had to total more than 110 years.
Sharon Hepburn helped organize the event. She said it was successful on its second running, adding: “We had many thank-you’s and many wanting to be a part of it if we run it again in the future.”
The goal of the event, Hepburn said, was three-fold: to help gather women in their 70s and 80s and give them a chance to play with younger players; to make a small contribution to the Children’s Funds, which gives financial assistance to youth players in the county; to collect canned goods, with each participant bringing two items.
“The tournament was a great success, and (it was) fun to watch different generations come together in a fun, yet competitive format,” said Alena Dvornikova, Palm Coast Tennis Center manager.
First place went to Gail Boud and Marie Sayer. Second place went to Tess Mitchell and Sue Ammerman. The oldest team was Dee Lee and Peggy Wolf, who totaled 151 years. The youngest team was Patty Christman and Doreen Davis, totaling 119 years.
