Who knew that one day throwing balls at teachers would benefit children in need?
But that is exactly what will happen 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Flagler Palm Coast High School.
The FPC Student Government Association is using the holiday season as an opportunity to put a new spin on an old tradition.
What used to be known as the annual Toys for Tots basketball game has morphed into a student-faculty Toys for Tots dodge-ball game.
History of the game
The annual basketball event took place between the faculty at FPC and the Sherriff’s Office. Then, when Matanzas High School opened its doors, the school took the place of the Sheriff’s Office for two years, before opting out.
After the loss of its opponent, FPC encouraged Steve Hinson, of Belle Terre Elementary School, to put together a team.
Last year the FPC-versus-BTES basketball game collected more than 150 toys and about $300 in cash.
Roger, Dodger
This year’s event not only gives the aching adults a break from running full-court press, but it also gives the students a chance to participate.
The event will feature a single-elimination tournament between all student teams, with the student championship team facing the faculty for the schoolwide title.
The main event between the student champions and the FPC faculty will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the games is one new, unwrapped toy to be donated to Toys for Tots, or a cash donation.
