As soon as the music started, an infectious burst of energy filled the 9 a.m. Friday Zumba class at Thriv Fitness. That energy was instructor Kathryn Zbikowski, who reminded the class that her only rule is to smile.

“I think that I offer something unique being in front of the class,” Zbikowski said. “I have eliminated a lot of that discomfort and self consciousness going into a gym atmosphere.”

Zbikowski, who became an instructor six months ago, went to her first Zumba class a year ago, when she was at a low point in her life.

At her heaviest, and almost at her breaking point, Zbikowski had previously applied to be on “The Biggest Loser” TV show. She made it to the final taping round, and thought, “I’m going to rock this,” when she got a call from the producer saying she was not heavy enough.

At size 24 and 300 pounds, Zbikowski was devastated.

“When you’re that heavy, you don’t know what to do,” Zbikowski said through teary eyes. “I saw that as my savior, or my way out.”

She had never told this story before. But now, she said she’s not afraid to share it anymore.

Zbikowski credits Zumba for getting her out of the hole.

“I feel very fortunate that I’ve found these Zumba instructors that are in Palm Coast,” Zbikowski said. “Because of their energy and excitement they brought to their classes, I’m hooked.”

After beginning Zumba, Zbikowski lost 80 pounds. She felt so rejuvenated by the Latin-inspired, dance-fitness party workout, that she became an instructor herself.

“I’m here to encourage everyone to just get up and come enjoy that first class,” Zbikowski said.

Zbikowski stresses that Zumba is an easy-to-follow exercise.

“In my class there are no mistakes, only unexpected solos,” she said.

Zbikowski hopes to spread the Zumba fever through a Party in Pink Zumbathon 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Buddy Taylor Middle School.

She will be partnering with the instructors who first inspired her — Melissa Beard, Vaneza Roberts and Michaela King — for the event.

Her event at Buddy Taylor is part of an international outreach through Zumba Fitness. Each event benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a global nonprofit to fund the fight against breast cancer.
