Vincent's Clubhouse fundraiser

Painting with a Twist in Palm Coast held a fundraiser on July 8 to benefit Vincent’s Clubhouse, which hosts a summer camp for kids with autism. Jazz and barbecue benefit

The North East Florida Jazz Association closed its 2017-18 music schedule with a barbecue and jazz event at the Palm Coast Community Center on Friday, June 22. The Young Lions of Jazz, made up of University of North Florida students, entertained the crowd.

About 120 music lovers enjoyed three events of tasty food and lively songs, according to a news release. Muriel McCoy, NEFJA president, thanked the community for supporting the organization through fundraising efforts. The event enabled NEFJA to provide four scholarships to college students as well as four scholarships to Flagler County high school students.

County’s history on TV

Flagler County will be featured on the July 26 program of Florida Road Trip at 8 p.m. on WUCF, according to a news release. Diana Marquis, historian for the Flagler County Historical Society, will present a tour of the One Room Schoolhouse in Bunnell, which she helped establish. The Brick Road will also be featured.

Sorority earns international award

Members of the Chi Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. earned a service award at the recent AKA International Convention in Houston, Texas. The award resulted from a challenge to donate the highest number of backpacks to school children locally.

Chi Delta Omega, a chapter of 52 members, donated 591 backpacks during service projects over the last 4 years and also performed service projects, including awarding scholarships to high school graduates, donating food, toiletries and clothes for the homeless, tutoring and mentoring with the Flagler Boys and Girls Club and being involved with Alzheimer’s awareness.

FCSO donates $10,000 to youth ranches

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly presented the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches with a check for $10,432, according to a news release. The money was raised through payroll deduction from employees of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and the Cowboy Fast Draw shootout held in Flagler County.

Vietnam Veteran Recognition Day

The Palm Coast Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8696 will hold a Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 47 Old Kings Road N.

Sign up for Citizens Academy

Flagler County is accepting applications for its fall Citizens Academy program, a free 10-week course designed to introduce participants to the day-to-day operations of Flagler County government. Registration is free, but class size is limited to 30. Applications are accepted on a “first come, first served” basis.

The classes will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 6 through Nov. 8. Interested residents can fill out an application at http://www.flaglercounty.org/citizens_academy or can request a form from PR and Marketing Specialist Rose Keirnan at [email protected]. Call 313-4026.

The City of Palm Coast is one of only a handful of cities in Florida operating its own municipal broadband utility — with over 50 miles of fiber for high-speed internet. County Commissioners recognized at FAC

The Florida Association of Counties (FAC) honored Flagler County Commissioners Greg Hansen, Nate McLaughlin, Donald O’Brien and David Sullivan at its annual conference and Educational Exposition Awards Luncheon in late June, according to a news release.

The commissioners were recognized as 2018 Presidential Advocates for their work to support and protect home rule during the 2018 Legislative Session.

Additionally, Commissioners Greg Hansen, Donald O’Brien and David Sullivan graduated from the FAC’s Certified County Commissioner Program while at the conference. Commissioners Charles Ericksen and Nate McLaughlin are alumni of the CCC Program. At the FAC event, Nate McLaughlin also received Torchbearer designation for the third year.

Flagler County’s Special Projects Coordinator Michael Esposito graduated from the FAC Continuing Government Education Program. County Attorney Al Hadeed received an “Appreciation Award” from the Florida Association of County Attorneys (FACA) for “his tireless work on behalf of Florida local governments before the 2017 and 2018 Florida Legislature on vacation rental legislation.”
