In November, students at Flagler Palm Coast High School were asked to submit a 3-5-minute speech on the importance of voting for the Voice of Democracy Speech Contest. Twenty-four FPC students entered the contest, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8696 in Palm Coast.
The VFW also sponsors an Elementary/Middle School version of the contest called Patriots Pen. An awards dinner was held Friday, Feb. 22 to honor the student winners.
At the high school level, the top two local contestants were sent to the district level (Volusia /Flagler area) and were judged again. Will Patin placed at the district level.
MPower Fitness and Welcome Home Real Estate are launching a diaper drive, starting March 1, to benefit the Alpha Women’s Center.
“As a mother, it's honor to help another woman during this important time in her life,” said Fatima Sena, the owner of Welcome Home Real Estate and MPower Fitness. “Buying diapers can be every expensive and this is one small way to show these women that they are loved and supported.”
Alpha Women’s Center offers free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and education on pregnancy options. The center also offers counseling and mentors to help mothers plan their next steps all free of charge.
Drop off all diapers during the month of March at Welcome Home Real Estate, 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite D216.
Palm Coast Community Church’s 5th-annual Superhero 5k Walk/Run and Kid’s Races was held at Central Park in Town Center on Sunday, Feb. 24.
Families had fun enjoying superhero meet and greets, a costume contest, face painting, bounce houses, Kona Ice and free kid’s races. The 5k had over 200 participants. The male winner and overall race winner was Sean Gilliam,age 15, with a time of 20:32. The female winner was Jada Williams, who also sang the National Anthem at the race start, age 15, with a time of 22:52. Over 100 kids participated in the kids races.
Steven Reid has found a passion in making jewelry from shells collected from local beaches, including Flagler, Daytona, Clearwater and Tampa.
“I was just walking on the beach and picked up a shell and it looked so good,” Reid said. “I said, ‘You know what? That would make a nice necklace.’”
He said his finds peace walking along the sand, keeping an eye out for unique shells.
He keeps the natural beauty of the shells intact when he creates pieces like necklaces and earrings. Reid hopes to sell his creations soon, but so far, he’s given them away to those who look like they need a reason to smile.
“It gives me piece of mind,” he said.
The Palm Coast Wood Carvers held a holiday party the Palm Coast Community Center in February so all the snow bird members could attend. A plaque, made by Jeff Kingdon, was given to John Maluski from past Palm Coast Program Director Howard W. Hawrey, as Maluski will now be the new program director.
