Flagler County Risk Manager Samantha Whitfield was presented the 2020 Preferred Safety and Risk Management Member of the Year Award at the Aug. 17 regular meeting of the Board of County Commissioners.

Paul Dawson, a vice president with Public Risk Insurance Advisors, gave Whitfield the award on behalf of the Preferred Governmental Insurance Trust. “She has been recognized both by the county and her peers,” he said.

Whitfield celebrates her one-year anniversary with Flagler County on Thursday, Aug. 20.

County Administrator Jerry Cameron lauded Whitfield for changing the safety and risk management culture in Flagler County, and thanked commissioners for seeing the need for a risk manager – a new position with Whitfield’s hire.

“This is like farming — you plant the seeds, and the harvest is coming in as we speak,” Cameron said of insurance policy savings already recognized. “She is paying for herself everyday.”

Whitfield, a 20-year Air Force veteran, works in the field with the various departments, evaluates exposure and risk and develops outstanding working relationships with the line workers, supervisors and management of all departments.

“Sam is a wonderful addition to our team,” said Human Resources Director Pam Wu. “She’s done some great things in the short time she’s been here, and we thank her for her hard work.”
