Chi Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the Ivy Community Foundation Inc. presented nine scholarship awards of $1,000 each to graduating high school seniors who are heading off to college in the fall, according to a press release. There were two students from Putnam County, with the remaining seven from Flagler County Schools.
The scholarship recipients are: Tevel Adams, Palatka High School; Wanyea Barbel, Flagler Palm Coast High School; Derrick Harris, FPCHS; Anne Joseph, FPCHS; Faith McKenney, FPCHS; William Patin, FPCHS; Christianna Powell, Matanzas High School; Leah Simpson, FPCHS; and Payton Pellicer, Palatka HS. Nia Felton and Kayla White, graduates whose mothers are a member of the Chi Delta Omega Chapter were also recognized for their achievement. An awards reception was held at Palm Coast United Methodist Church with students, parents, AKA/ICF members, Flagler Education Foundation Executive Director Joe Rizzo, plus former scholarship recipients Nina Eustaquio (2013) and Emany Desinor (2018) in attendance.
The Miss Flagler County Scholarship Program is a Flagler County Tradition that has been held since the 1940s — with a goal to build leadership skills, emphasize poise and self-confidence and to empower the local young women through leadership and community service.
The 2018 Queens participated in many events, such as The Alzheimer’s Association Walk, Intracoastal and beach cleanups and Feed Flagler.
There are four age divisions: 5-7, 8-11, 12-15 and 16-23. The 16- to 23-year-old contestants are required to write an essay and to participate in pre-pageant judge interviews where they are scored on goal orientation, conversational skills and overall personality.

The Boys and Girls Club of Volusia/Flagler celebrated its annual honor roll banquet at the Daytona 500 Club, where students in third to 12th were recognized with awards for their academic achievement and good character in school. During the banquet, Chi Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc of Palm Coast, was recognized as the 2019 Volunteers of the Year, representing the Flagler Club at Rymfire Elementary School. The AKA chapter received the award because of their impact as sponsors of the weekly girls mentoring group, SMART Girls.
Twenty-four Wadsworth Elementary School students were taken on a limo and lunch date to Chick-fil-A, as a reward for independently reading and passing comprehension assessments for all 15 of the Sunshine State Young Readers Award and Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr. books this school year. This was a first for Wadsworth, and Media Specialist Teresa Rizzo said the students were very excited.
Chief Chris Sepe of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office graduated from the 8th Class of the Florida Sheriffs Association’s prestigious Commanders Academy, according to a press release.
“Chief Sepe is over our Community Policing Division and this graduation will further prepare him to be an effective leader for the men and women serving Flagler County,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the release. “On behalf of our agency, we all wish to congratulate him on this achievement.”
In addition to successfully completing this two-week training course, Commanders Academy Class 8 also raised $42,036.30 for the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, which helps prevent delinquency and works to develop lawful, resilient and productive citizens.
This spring, more than 500 students at Rymfire Elementary School competed against other students in their grade level to practice math facts and get chances to earn points with a newly implemented program called Strategy Ball, developed by third-grade teacher Shane Manley. Over the course of 10 weeks, classes were assigned a group of math facts to memorize. On their game day, each class would line up in the Strategy Ball room to attempt to shoot basketball hoops for each correctly stated math fact.
Class scores and individual student stats were kept up to date on the strategyball.com website and competed against other classes in a March Madness-style bracket format. Each class that won their bracket received a class party and the highest scorer(s) of each grade level received a trophy. For first grade, Shaniya Youmans and Roman Lipovich won first place. For second grade, Kadyn Davis, Zamaiya Sanders, Gabrielle Soares, Jazlyn Giles and Diego Rivera won first place. Third grade winners in first place were Jocelyn Vitkauskas, Brody Youngman, Bryson Manley, and Zaiydan Hardy.
