A 26-year-old woman from Orlando was sent to the hospital after being struck by a car Aug. 6, in Flagler Beach. She was in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Maura Nations, of Orlando, was at the beach with her dog, when the dog darted up the stairs toward State Road A1A at 15th Street South. She attempted to retrieve the dog as it crossed the road, just as a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado was traveling northbound.

Charles Esbaugh, 65, of Palatka, was the driver. He swerved to avoid a collision with Nations, but the right front of the vehicle did strike her. He stopped on the east shoulder.

Nations was transported to Halifax Trauma Center.
