The Flagler Wolfpack 14U did not allow a point in their last eight games, including their 31-0 conference championship win over the Star Ready Gators Saturday, Nov. 15, at Ridgeview High School.
After punching their ticket to nationals, the Wolfpack chose to celebrate in a way that very few champions ever do: giving back.
The day after the football team won, 20 players volunteered to partner with the local Rotary Clubs to package 10,000 meals for families around the world for the Stop Hunger Now program on Sunday Nov. 16, at the Flagler Beach United Methodist Church.
“It was a pretty cool experience for them,” coach Curt Schalit. “The kids always raise money for themselves for nationals and things like that, and we wanted to do something that had nothing to do with us to give back.”
Stop Hunger Now meals are highly nutritious, dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, flavoring and 21 essential vitamins and minerals. Each package provides a reasonable serving for six, and each serving costs approximately 29 cents to make.
“I thought it was really cool that we were able to feed 10,000 people,” said Adam Young, one of the players. “It showed us that life is not about football. We have to help people who are less unfortunate. I wish I could do more.”
The Wolfpack will be competing in the United Youth Football League National Championships Dec. 6-12, in Plant City. They have yet to be challenged, and Schalit hopes his last year will end with championship rings for the kids and him.
“They play their best when it matters the most,” he said. “How these guys are winning is what makes them remarkable. It’s so great to be able to go to nationals and spend a week with them. This will be the last time I coach my two sons and these guys, so we’re going to make sure that we enjoy the journey.”
