The Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs will bring the Wing-T to Volusia County 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, when they play the Seabreeze Sandcrabs.
Health was the No. 1 concern for Flagler Palm Coast football coach Caesar Campana in the preseason. Just one week in, he’s already lost his starting tight end and a starting defensive lineman.
Junior tight end Dustin Bowens and senior lineman Semaj Worthy will not be dressed for Thursday’s game against Seabreeze.
Seabreeze comes into the game off a 10-7 loss to Spruce Creek. The Sandcrabs went 5-4-1 last season, according to www.MaxPreps.com.
But the Sandcrabs will have plenty of weapons, Campana said. That includes senior QB Trenton Norvell, who has committed to play for Marshall University.
“They have a Division I quarterback who can light up the scoreboard,” Campana said. “Not only does he throw the ball well, he runs the ball well.”
As for the Bulldogs, Campana said despite losing two starters in last week’s game against Matanzas, several other players who sustained injuries should be ready to play.
The game plan won’t change much, either.
“We’re going to run what we’ve run the last couple of weeks and just try and get better at it this week,” Campana said.
The game plan against the Pirates included several different running plays — typical of the Wing-T formation — but it also included several passing plays.
Campana’s trust in sophomore QB Colton Boyd seems to be rising, though.
Campana also stressed the importance of the special teams play against Seabreeze and for the remainder of the season.
“We have to be careful on how we punt the ball and kick it off and cover kicks,” he said.
The game also will be played on an Astroturf field, something the Bulldogs players aren’t used to.
Although the playing surface might be more consistent, Campana said, it’s important for his younger players to get their feet on the field before the game starts so they can get accustomed to it quickly.
One of the Bulldogs’ five goals this season was to beat Matanzas. With that crossed off their list, Campana said it is time to shift focus to Seabreeze. The Bulldogs have only beaten the Sandcrabs twice in eight meetings.
