UPDATED 4 p.m.
A dead man was discovered at Gamble Rogers State Recreation Area the morning of July 22.

Flagler Beach Chief Dan Cody said a passerby found the body two or three feet in the water.

“He hadn’t been there long,” Cody said. From there, detectives located a vehicle parked near the Flagler Beach water tower. Inside, they located an ID that matched the body. The address was in St. Augustine, so detectives contacted law enforcement there, to notify next of kin.

At that moment, Cody said, an officer in St. Augustine was preparing to file a missing person report. A woman had come in shortly before to report that her brother was missing.

A victim’s advocate was contacted to assist with notifying the sister, but as of 4 p.m., she had not yet been notified, and therefore the identity of the man has not yet been released.

Cody said the body had cuts, bruises and abrasions that are consistent with injuries of a being tossed in the surf.

“We don’t know whether they were self-inflicted,” he added. The medical examiner’s report has not been completed yet.

Gamble Rogers State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach is located at 3100 S. State Road A1A, three miles south of the Flagler Beach Pier.
