Out of 1,560 responses to the survey, 64% of parents said they were in favor of mandatory school uniforms in Flagler.

At the end the Nov. 1 School Board meeting, Superintendent Janet Valentine announced the results of the district’s recent parent survey, which measured support for a potential mandatory uniform policy in Flagler County.

“We’ve been busy since the last meeting,” she said, citing a combined 10,173 phone and email surveys issued to local parents.

In total, 64%, or 1,004 parents, responded in favor of uniforms; 36%, or 556, opposed.

Of 7,490 emails sent out, 375 parents who replied responded, “Yes;” 265 responded, “No.”

Of 2,683 phone calls made, 629 parents were for; 291 were against. The remaining number did not pick up or did not have an opinion.

There was a total 15% response rate, Valentine added, which is “typical.” But School Board member Andy Dance worried that the system was flawed, that a true sample might not have been measured, considering it was only a one-shot questionnaire, with no reminders to respond.

“I think we’re seeing a certain trend here,” Valentine said. “I think that was the purpose of the survey.”

According to a similar survey sent out Nov. 1, 70.6% of all county staff also support student uniforms, while 29.4% oppose them.

However, only 48% support district-wide uniforms for staff workers, a figure Board member John Fischer called “disturbing.”

When announced, only 180 of an expected 900 teachers and staff had answered the survey. The rest have until Friday, Nov. 4, to respond.

A town hall meeting regarding uniforms, open to all parents, students and community members, will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the GSB.
