The Matanzas Pirates boys soccer team opened its season with three straight home games, but now it’s time to hit the road.

The Pirates (2-0-1, 1-0) began the season with a 3-1 win over Taylor. Last season, Taylor scored more than 100 goals. Two players each scored more than 40, and both returned this season. However, coach Rich Weber’s Pirates kept Taylor’s scoring threats in check, controlling the midfield with seniors Ben Capua and Ryan Kosinski.

In the second game of the season, the Pirates tied Pedro Menendez, 2-2. Menendez scored the equalizing goal with less than six seconds on the clock.

The Pirates then mercy-ruled Clay, 8-0, in the third game. The Pirates had eight different players score goals in that Nov. 15 game, including Kosinski, Javier Reyes, Eric Scarpa, Eric LaVerne, Nick Weber, Eric Laverne and Ty Santana.

“Overall, a good, quality start,” Weber said of his team's perfomance early on.

The Pirates will get into the strength of their district schedule following the Thanksgiving break, and heading into the next month.

The next three games for the Pirates are on the road. The next home game is 7 p.m. Dec. 8, against Nease.

The Pirates play crosstown rival FPC 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at FPC.
