Brooklyn, New York residents Luigi Camporeale, 85, and Filomena Camporeale, 76, died the night of Jan. 26 in a crash on Interstate 95 near mile marker 289 in Flagler County.

The car the couple was driving, a 2012 Ford Escape, was facing south on the paved western shoulder of the interstate's southbound lanes at about 9:42 p.m. when Luigi Camporeale, the driver, "for unknown reasons" pulled left across the center southbound lane in front of a Volkswagen tractor trailer driven by 50-year-old Louisville, Kentucky resident Elias Saavedra, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

The front of the tractor trailer struck the Escape's left side, and both vehicles ended up in the median against a guardrail, facing south.

Luigi Camporeale and Filomena Camporeale both died at the scene of the crash.

Saavedra was not injured, according to the report.
