As of March 26, 36,600 Flagler County residents have been vaccinated for COVID-19, and the county is eighth in the state out of Florida's 67 counties for the percentage of the population vaccinated, according to Florida Department of Health-Flagler Health Officer Bob Snyder.

The Health Department has dispersed teams to local churches, and staff were at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Palm Coast on March 26 vaccinating 200 people with their first doses of the Moderna vaccine, Florida Department of Health-Flagler Communications Manager Gretchen Smith said on Flagler Broadcasting's "Free For All Friday" radio program.

Other residents were receiving second doses at the Carver Center gym in Bunnell.

The department has been receiving enough vaccines recently to keep up with demand, Snyder said.

"We’ve been at the sweet spot over the past few weeks where demand and supply are equal," he said.

So far, he said, the Department of Health in Flagler County has received only the Moderna vaccine, but the Johnson & Johnson vaccine will likely also be available sometime in late April.

Meanwhile, he warned, Florida and26 other states are seeing an uptick in cases, as is Flagler County.

"We most likely attribute the surge that we're seeing now to Bike Week, COVID fatigue, people feeling that it's over and we're out of the woods — and we're not," Snyder said. "We’re not seeing robust use of the masks that we saw just a couple months ago, so we still want to encourage that."

The Florida Department of Health-Flagler would like to see 75%-80% of the local population vaccinated, to achieve herd immunity.

With herd immunity, said Florida Department of Health-Flagler Medical Director Dr. Stephen Bickel, "We could maximize our health protection and open up our lives.”
