Deputies have arrested three teenagers who sneaked out of Matanzas High School by jumping a fence Sept. 16 on charges of armed burglary in connection with break-ins at two F-section homes.
A Fitzgerald Lane resident was home at about 11:25 a.m. Sept. 16 when he heard glass break at his neighbor’s home at 46 Fitzgerald Lane, and saw three young people he didn’t recognize outside, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
He called the Sheriff’s Office and described the teens, and deputies saw them run from the area as patrol cars arrived. One deputy caught one of the three — a 15-year-old, 10th-grade girl — but two boys ran into the woods.
As deputies set up a perimeter and searched for them, Deputy John Landi, the school resource deputy assigned to Matanzas High School, called and gave the names of three students who hopped the school fence and ran from school officials at 9:30 that morning.
A deputy with a police dog named Repo tracked the two boys and caught them with the help of two other deputies in the woods near Flemingwood Lane and Flat Rock Lane.
One of the boys was 17 and in ninth grade, and the other was 15 and in 10th grade.
Deputies found that the trio was also involved in a burglary at 19 Fircrest Lane — where they stole two bags containing a .22 caliber starting revolver, a computer, clothes, jewelry and shoes, according to the news release — before they went to the home at 46 Fitzgerald Lane and tried to break in by throwing a stool through a window.
Deputies returned all of the stolen items to their owners and charged the teens with felony armed burglary and related misdemeanors.
