Age is just a number. Ask the players on Team Flagler, a competitive slow-pitch softball team that recently returned from Auburn, Ala., where they competed in the U.S. Southern International Senior Softball Association Championships, from July 12 to 14.
Playing in the 60AA age bracket, Team Flagler suffered only one loss, playing against teams from Alabama, Georgia and Florida. In the final games, Flagler swept Strykers (Kimberly, Ala.), 17-3 and 19-7, to win the bracket championship.
Steve Bolter, shortstop for Team Flagler, took home the MVP award for the bracket, hitting .727 with three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs.
All earning 60AA All-Tournament honors were pitcher/leadoff hitter Jim Zgorzelski (3-0, .818 batting average and nine RBIs), outfielder/DH Jim Causier (.875 batting average, three doubles, three triples and six RBIs), outfielder Rob Kreiger (.889 batting average, two doubles, one triple and four RBIs) and first baseman/DH Bill Collum (.875 batting average, three doubles, three triples and four RBIs).
Team Flagler, now ranked No. 7 in the Florida Half Century League, travels next to Altamonte Springs for a FHC tournament during the first weekend in August, as the team continues to prepare for the Florida State Championships, which will be played in December.
Team Flagler will also be following up its U.S. Southern Championship by traveling to Myrtle Beach, S.C., at the end of October for the ISSA U.S. Open National Championships.
Also, because Team Flagler won its bracket, the team qualified for the 2014 ISSA/ISF World Tournament of Champions (all 2013 ISSA tournament winners), which will be played in January 2014, in Tampa.
