Sweet Waters: Come for a drink, stay for dinner

Kathryn Policastro and her niece Dawn Romero, owners of the Tuscan Grille in Flagler Beach, have taken on another culinary venture with the opening of Sweet Waters Smokehouse, Bar and Grill, the new eatery on the Intracoastal Waterway by the Flagler Beach bridge.

Sweet Waters has been doing a soft opening since the first week in October, but with the approval of their entertainment license, the owners are ready to hit the restaurant scene in full force.

While other establishments in this location have had issues with the sound ordinance, the new owners have sworn to family-style, low-key entertainment.

They’re taking the “neighbor friendly approach,” with music ending at 8 p.m. In addition to music, televisions at the deck bar will show football games.

But, with an inside dining area in addition to a large deck with two outside bars, the new owners are approaching the inside as a full-service restaurant, while the outside has open seating; a limited menu can be ordered at the window or at the outside bar. The goal is to have more of a focus on the food, rather than the bar scene.

The kitchen is serving fresh seafood, steaks and barbecue from a smoker.

“With Tuscan Grille being very successful" — it celebrated two years last month — "and this location being available, it was a no brainer,” said manager and Kathryn’s husband, Mike Policastro, or “Uncle Mike,” as most people know him. “We’re taking the Tuscan Grille approach: large portions and reasonable prices.”

The hope is that the deck, with water access and a prime sunset view, will be the draw for a weekend marketplace with music and vendors to sell jewelry and artwork, making Sweet Waters into a destination location for families.

Their motto for the eatery is “Come for happy hour, stay for dinner.”

Sweet Waters is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and closed Monday, all at 820 Moody Lane, Flagler Beach.

Brothers serve craft beer at Break-Awayz
If you’re looking for a variety of craft beer in Flagler County, look no further. Brothers Tyler and Kyle Ecker are offering 60 microbrews and imports in bottle and another six on tap at Break-Awayz at the Beach, which held its grand opening Nov. 9.

“In the past couple years, craft brewers have gone through the roof, and people are wanting to try some new things,” Tyler Ecker said. “We have beers that no one else carries and are doing something no one else here is doing.”

In addition to beer, Break-Awayz is also serving wine, sake and tapas-style food. There are no fryers in the kitchen, and food is available until closing.

The brothers are also putting a spin on entertainment. A large portion of the inside has been transformed into a golf simulator and putting green. If golf isn’t your thing, then they have pool and foosball tables on the outside deck. They also have three high definition TV’s for sporting events and occasionally will have a band playing inside.

The goal for the oceanfront tapas bar is to offer a clean, relaxing atmosphere. The Ecker brothers want their customers to feel like they are at home.

Break-Awayz is located at 819 N. Oceanshore Blvd., Flagler Beach, and open 5 p.m. to midnight Monday through Wednesday, 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday and Friday, noon to 2 a.m. Saturday and noon to midnight Sundays.

Golden Lion to host full moon party
The Golden Lion Café will host a full moon party 5:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 with music by Zebbhi Niyah Band. There will also be dancing under the stars and a limbo contest.

Food Truck Tuesday to benefit Christmas with a Deputy
Palm Coast’s Food Truck Tuesdays event will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Central Park in Town Center. The event will benefit the Christmas with a Deputy program this month, and activities will include K-9 demonstrations and fingerprinting.

November’s Food Truck Tuesday will feature 10 food trucks — mobile kitchens, canteens and catering trucks that offer gourmet foods including appetizers, main dishes, side dishes and desserts. Foods to be featured this month include Greek, Japanese, Hawaiian/vegan dishes, regional American, fish and chips, barbecue and desserts.
