Paige McComb has never surfed before. But as she stood at the Si Como No Inn, home of North Beach Surf Camp, she clutched a long board twice her size, anxious for the chance to learn.
McComb was one of 43 future surfers, ages 5 to 16, spending their week at surf camp.
When Jimmy Blumenfeld started the camp six years ago, he had two campers.
The next year, he had eight. The number of kids learning to surf has increased every year, and Blumenfeld is not done yet.
He has big dreams to advertise the camp nationally and bring young surfers from all over the country to Flagler Beach for the sleep-away surf camp.
Currently, the camp offers kids surfing and skateboard instruction, science exploration, kayak and ecotours.
The camp is for young people who are learning to surf for the first time and for experienced surfers looking to pick up tips from the pros. The hands-on, mind-on curriculum has a safety-first attitude and is a place where everyone is a winner, Blumenfeld said.
But it’s bigger than surfing and skating, he said. It’s all about the kids and their characters.
“I want these kids to realize they have a lot more in common than all these little cliques,” Blumenfeld said.
