And then there were three.
Dr. Phyllis Edwards, a former Flagler Schools administrator, has withdrawn from consideration from the field of four finalist candidates for the superintendent position to replace outgoing Jacob Oliva.
Edwards, who previously served as assistant superintendent for instruction and accountability before leaving the district to take the job as superintendent for the City Schools of Decatur, Georgia, notified the Flagler Schools search committee on April 17 of her intention to rescind her application.
A letter provided to the Palm Coast Observer by Flagler Schools attorney April 18 from Edwards to the board did not indicate a specific reason for her withdrawal.
That leaves three remaining candidates: Jeffrey Umbaugh, Dr. Gerald Wilson, and James Tager. Dr. Ronnie Dotson, who had originally been identified as a top contender for the job, removed himself from consideration just before the finalists were announced by the district on April 11, whittling the group to four.
Interviews with the three finalists were scheduled for this week, on Thursday, April 20, with the entire school board, and again on Friday, April 21, in one-on-one interviews with school board members. Finalist also participated in a "meet-and-greet" reception with the public on Wednesday, April 19.
On May 2, members of the school board will hold a special board meeting to select the next superintendent.
