+ Certain signs with Southern University
Lawrence Certain, a former standout for the Flagler Palm Coast High School Bulldogs basketball team, signed a full athletic scholarship with Southern University.

Certain, who was a transfer student for FPC in his senior season, will head to campus in August.

FPC coach Gary McDaniel said Certain averaged 17 points and eight rebounds per game last season. Certain helped the Bulldogs (12-14) reach the semifinals of the District 2-6A tournament.

“I am very happy with Lawrence signing at Southern,” McDaniel said Monday. “Hard work and patience paid off. Hopefully he will reach his potential at the college level.”

Southern, located in Baton Rouge, La., is a member of NCAA Division I and competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Tim Scott, a Matanzas High School graduate, competed in the International Weightlifting Federation 2011 World Junior Weightlifting Championships June 30 to July 7, in Penang, Malaysia.

Scott lifts collegiately for Northern Michigan University.

Scott snatched 108 kilograms (238 pounds) and also set a personal-best in the clean-and-jerk with 145 kg (319.67 pounds). He finished 15th overall.

“It was a learning experience as well as a complete joy,” Scott said. “It was really cool to compete in another country, but for me, none of the competing or training compared to the feeling I had being able to wear a warm-up jacket that said ‘USA’ in big, bold letters on the back.”

Scott attributes his success to coaches Joe Lippo and Andy Tyszt and his parents, Bruce and Tina Scott.
