+ FPC wrestling wins 5-Star Conference
Just one week after a tough Flagler Rotary tournament, the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs wrestling team got back to its winning ways by claiming the 5-Star Conference championship Saturday, Jan. 22.
 

The Bulldogs placed all 14 wrestlers it brought, including seven individual champions. FPC finished 50 points ahead of DeLand High School to capture the title.
 

Individual champions:
Byron Lively — 112 pounds
JZ Williams — 135 pounds
Nick Michael — 140 pounds
Jimmy Gomes — 160 pounds
Johnny Barrett — 189 pounds
Nick Shaw — 215 pounds
Derron Green — Heavyweight
 

Overall team results: FPC (253.5 points), DeLand (205), University (86), Seabreeze (85.5), Atlantic (83), Deltona (41), Pine Ridge (39), New Smyrna Beach (34) and Pierson Taylor (0).

+ FPC boys soccer wins first in first round
The Flagler Palm Coast boys soccer team defeated Deltona, 2-0, Monday, Jan. 24, in the first round of the district tournament.
 

Lorenzo Butler and Drew Jones each scored a goal, while Alex Varon tallied two assists.
 

The Bulldogs (No. 4 seed) faced the winner of the New Smyrna Beach (No. 8 seed) vs. Spruce Creek (No. 1 seed) game Wednesday, Jan. 26. Both scores were too late to report.

+ MHS boys soccer falls to Ponte Vedra
The Matanzas boys soccer team’s season ended at the hands of Ponte Vedra for the second-consecutive season.
 

The Pirates lost 3-0, Monday, Jan. 24.
 

The halftime score was 0-0, though the Pirates had a disallowed goal in the first half.
 

Ponte Vedra tallied two set-piece goals in the second half and a third goal toward the end of the game, when the Pirates were pressing more players forward to score.
 

Matanzas coach Rich Weber gave credit to Ponte Vedra, saying it’s a very good team.

+ Girls basketball to play in districts
The Matanzas High School girls basketball team will be the No. 9 seed and will play eight-seeded Ponte Vedra at noon Saturday, Jan. 29. The winner of this game will square off against top-seeded St. Augustine at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1.
 

The Flagler Palm Coast girls basketball team will be the No. 3 seed and will host its first-round game against New Smyrna Beach at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1.
