+ FPC boys soccer on a roll
The Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs (11-7-2, 9-6-1 district) will likely be the fourth seed in the district tournament, which will begin the week of Jan. 24.
The Bulldogs have won five in a row heading into their second-to-last game, defeating Seabreaze, DeLand, University, Deltona and Mainland over the stretch. The Bulldogs have allowed only two goals in their past five games.
FPC plays 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at St. Augustine, and then closes its season 7:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at cross-town rival Matanzas.
Leading scorers for FPC are Alex Varon (eight goals, seven assists); Umarkhon Ayupov (six goals, eight assists); and Lorenzo Butler (seven goals, three assists).
+ MHS boys soccer prepares
Though the Pirates boys soccer team has endured injuries to many starters over the past few weeks, coach Rich Weber is confident his team will get healthy to make a run in the district tournament. The Pirates are currently 7-7-2 and will host cross-town rival FPC 7:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21.
The Pirates will be the No. 7 seed when they play against Ponte Vedra Monday, Jan. 24, in the first round of the district tournament.
Leading scorers for Matanzas include T.J. Von Diezelski (eight goals, 10 assists); Ryan Kosinski (five goals, four assists); and Josh O’Hara (six goals, two assists).
+ FPC girls lift to third
The Flagler Palm Coast girls weightlifting team placed third at the Five-Star Conference Weightlifting Championships Jan. 12.
Individually, six girls place in the top three, and five advanced to the sectional finals, which will take place 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at FPC.
Individual results: Qiana Turpin, third place (110-pound class); Ebony Bartley, third place( 139-pound class); Shyla Ramage, second place (154-pound class); Aaliyah Lews, second place (169-pound class); Brittany Lewis, third place (183-pound class); and Desiree Nieves, third place (unlimited class).
+ FPC boys basketball No. 3?
The Flagler Palm Coast boys basketball team is 8-10 overall, with a 6-4 district record.
The Bulldogs are vying for the No. 3 seed in the district tournament but are going through their toughest portion of the schedule.
Coach Gary McDaniel said senior center Lawrence Certain is averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds over the last eight games and is garnering interest from various college programs.
Sophomore forward Willie Gardner has become a hardworking defensive presence to help anchor the front line, McDaniel said.
The Bulldogs play 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at home against University and again 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at home against Deltona.
+ FPC girls basketball 15-5
The Flagler Palm Coast girls basketball team is 15-5 overall, with a 10-4 district record.
The Lady Bulldogs play 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at home against Mainland and 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at home on senior night against Trinity Christian.
