Both Matanzas High School crosscountry teams will be headed to the state meet after the teams qualified in the Region 1-2A meet Saturday, Nov. 13, at Sunnyhill Farms, in Tallahassee.

The boys team took second place in the region, led by overall region champion David Drumm. Drumm ran a personalbest 16 minutes, 8 seconds and set the school record. The boys team finished seven points behind region champion Bishop Kenny High School.

“We’ve been waiting for him to explode, and he picked the right time to do it,” said Matanzas coach James Wolfe. “This was a tough course, and it wasn’t a personal-record course by any means.”

The boys team had three of its seven runners set personal records.

The girls team finished in fifth place, led by Christine Marcano, who finished in fourth place overall with a time of 19:48. Two of the team’s seven girls set personal records.

The boys team ended the meet with 80 team points and a 16:58 team average. The girls team ended with 138 team points and a 20:56 team average.

The state meet will take place Saturday, Nov. 20, at Little Everglades Ranch, in Dade City.
