Some Hammock-area voters filled out the wrong ballots on Election Day after poll workers incorrectly handed them ballots that included Dunes Community Development District races even though the voters weren't part of the Dunes CDD.

The mix-up included a small number of ballots relative to the total cast in those races, Supervisor of Elections Kaiti Lenhart said.

"Even thought there were some ballots that were distributed improperly, it would not have changed the results," she said.

The error occurred only during on-site voting on Election Day, and involved two races — the Dunes CDD Seat 2 and Seat 4 races.

In the case of Seat 2, the error involved 142 ballots, while for Seat 4, 85 ballots were involved.

Richard DeMatteis won Seat 2 with a margin of 180 votes, beating Ralph Dumke 1,106 to 926, while Gary M. Crahan won Seat 4 with a margin of 245 votes, beating Paul Pershes 1,056 to 811.

"The candidates were understanding," Lenhart said. "It was just an Election Day issue at the polling place. They understand that the vote by mail and early voting are 100% accurate."
