The Flagler and St. Augustine skateboard communities came together Saturday, May 18, for a benefit skateboarding contest in honor of Shawn “Bam Bam” Arthur.

Hosted by North Beach Surf Adventures, with help from the Flagler Surf Club, the contest acted as a fundraiser for Arthur, an 11-year-old St. Augustine skateboarder, who has earned a golden ticket to the King of the Groms contest June 13-16, in Minnesota. Arthur also earned a golden ticket last year, but he did not make it to the contest because of a lack of funds.

“This year, we decided we weren’t going to let that happen,” said Jimmy Blumenfeld, of North Beach Surf Adventures. “All proceeds, from entry, raffle tickets and the food tent, go to the Arthur family to make sure he gets to go and shine.”

But Blumenfeld said this contest is just one of many people should expect to see at the skate park at Wadsworth Park.

“There’s a big demand for skate contests in Flagler Beach,” he said. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and we plan on having a series. We want to put a lot of the proceeds toward getting some shade here at the Wadsworth skate park.”
