The Matanzas girls weightlifting team went out with a bang on the Pirates' Senior Night on Dec. 14. With a total score of 74 points, Matanzas took down visiting St. Augustine, Crescent City and Nease.
1st Place Finishers: Danielle Thompson (119), Bianca Secor (129), Adrianna Brandt (154), Juliana Smith (199) and Chiara Longo (UNL).
2nd Place Finishers: Kim Delsordo (110), Katie Welker (119),Taylor Phillips (154), Jessica Rodrigues (169), Grace Belanger (183) and Mary Leonard (UNL).
3rd Place Finishers: Riley White (110), Savannah Evans (129), Shaprie House (169) and Madison Bower (199).
Thompson, Secor and Smith all set school records in the clean-and-jerk, while Secor and Smith also set records in the bench press.
Miracle Porter to have jersey number retired
Former Matanzas girls soccer player Miracle Porter, who broke the state record for goals scored during her time with the Pirates, will have her jersey number retired prior to the Pirates' game against crosstown rival Flagler Palm Coast. The game will be played at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at Matanzas High School.
Matanzas boys basketball defeats West Port
The Pirates escaped their battle with West Port, winning 69-68 on Dec. 16 as part of the Brinkley Shootout at Ocala North Marion. Greg Layne led Matanzas (4-2) with 20 points and 23 rebounds, and Logan Stover chipped in 19 points.
Pirates boys soccer bounces back with wins over Orange Park and Clay, girls yet to win a district game
After dropping four-straight games, the Pirates boys soccer team bounced back with a 4-1 win over Orange Park on Dec. 11 and an 8-1 rout of Clay on Dec. 15 — both home games. However, the Pirates lost a close match 3-2 to Menendez on Dec. 18 at Pedro Menendez High School. The loss leaves Matanzas at 2-4 in district play.
The girls team, which steamrolled Palatka 8-0 on Dec. 12, was defeated 6-5 by Clay on Dec. 14 and 3-1 by DeLand on Dec. 18. The girls are 5-7 and have yet to win a district game.
FPC boys soccer gets second win, lady Bulldogs on a roll
The Flagler Palm Coast boys soccer team (2-10-2) captured its second win of the season in a narrow 3-2 victory over Mainland on Dec. 13 but followed up that success with consecutive losses — both 4-0 defeats at the hands of DeLand (Dec. 14) and New Smyrna Beach (Dec. 18) at home.
The girls team had an uneven week following its 1-1 tie against Creekside on Dec. 6. The Bulldogs handled New Smyrna Beach 6-2 on Dec. 12, were blanked 2-0 by Nease the next day and bounced back with a 7-0 win over Deltona on Dec. 15 in FPC’s first round game since the beginning of December. Senior Saba Amiri led FPC with six goals combined against New Smyrna Beach and Deltona.
