History has been made.

The Matanzas Lady Pirates softball team knocked off Pedro Menendez, 2-0, Tuesday night, and will play Ponte Vedra Thursday night for the District 4-5A championship.

Regardless of what happens Thursday, the Lady Pirates have clinched their first state playoff berth in school history.

Amber Johnson was the winning pitcher for Matanzas. She had two strikeouts and one walk, but strong defense behind her helped get the shutout victory.

The game remained scoreless through the first six innings, and then in the bottom half of the sixth inning, Matanzas' Ashley Pelose roped a two-out double to plate two runs, giving the Lady Pirates the win.

Cheyenna Espinoza went 1-for-3 with a single. Kelsey Lukes went 1-for-2 with a single. Pelose, the lone senior on the team, finished the night 1-for-3 and hit the game-winning double, knocking in both runs.

“This was a great defensive and pitching game and we bunted and moved the runners around in the sixth like we needed to,” Matanzas coach Sara Novak said. “And Ashley came through with a hard hit up the middle. It was awesome.”

Coming into the season, Matanzas was winless against Pedro Menendez it its history. Tuesday night's win marked the third win over Menendez this season for Matanzas.

The district championship will be 7 p.m. Thursday, at Matanzas. Ponte Vedra (No. 1 seed) will be the home team.
