Matanzas 2-0 for the first time in program history
Coach Robert Ripley told his team, “The best part about being 2-0 is the chance to be 3-0.” The Matanzas Pirates have already accomplished two goals they had never completed, beating Flagler Palm Coast and getting to 2-0, its last-year season total. They blew out the Atlantic Sharks 41-2 Friday, Sept. 4, at Matanzas.
“We have to continue to work and gain more momentum because the tests only get bigger from here on out,” Ripley said.
The Pirates ran roughshod over Atlantic, scoring six touchdowns on the ground by four different players. Mackenzy Wagner opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Daniel Dillard, who rushed for 155 yards, recorded a hat trick, scoring three times in the second quarter, along with Doug Wilson, who also exploded for a 72-yard scamper before halftime to put Matanzas up 34-0. Rahkim Perry punched in the last score for the Pirates. Philip Moultrie led the Matanzas with 41 receiving yards, and, on defense, Andre Bodison grabbed an interception.
“Our running game has been solid; it's a credit to our commitment to the running game and our offensive line working their butts off,” Ripley added.
Matanzas will look to continue its historic run when they play Mount Dora Friday, Sept. 11, in Lake County.
Moody gets first win as FPC’s top dog
After suffering its first ever loss to rival Matanzas, the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs (1-1) took their frustration out on the Clay Blue Devils, winning 7-0 in a defensive battle Friday, Sept. 4, at FPC.
Running back Que’Shaun Byrd found the end zone from a yard out to score the only touchdown between both teams on the night, and the win served as Tommy Moody’s first as the new Bulldogs coach.
Before a bye week and a four consecutive games on the road, the Bulldogs will have the biggest test of their season next, when they play the top-ranked 6A team, the Mainland Buccaneers Friday, Sept. 11, at FPC.
Beginning greatness
Carmella Carlisi, a 9-year-old fourth-grader, recently competed in and won 10 of 10 junior golf tournaments in her 8-10-year-olds age group, run by Florida Junior Golf Association, for ages 8-18, this past summer.
The tournaments took place at the surrounding area golf courses, and the season ended with a Tournament of Champions, where the top players competed. Carmella, who has only been playing golf for three years, won each of the regular tournaments in her age group, and she finished with a perfect 10-for-10 record with a Tournament of Champions win. Her love of the game has been fostered by her father who played collegiate golf.
