+ Scarpa signs with Northwood University
Matanzas senior midfielder Eric Scarpa recently signed his National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Northwood University, in West Palm Beach.

Northwood is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and competes in the Florida Sun Conference. Last season, the Seahawks went 10-5-2, including 6-3 in conference play.

Because of a serious back injury, Scarpa missed his entire junior season. (To read the story about Scarpa overcoming his injury, search “Scarpa” on www.PalmCoastObserver.com.)

Matanzas coach Rich Weber said Scarpa’s hard work and dedication are two of his biggest attributes.

“He has overcome a lot of adversity and persistence in overcoming his injury situation, whereas many other student-athletes would simply give up,” Weber said. “He fought back hard through the challenges and is not only a better soccer player, but also a better young man.”

+ Pirates baseball routs Iroquois on Senior Night
The Matanzas Pirates baseball team defeated Iroquois High School (Elma, N.Y.), 14-4, Thursday, April 12, on Senior Night.

The Pirates honored four seniors: Derrius Bauer, Tony Mendez, Kevin Moore and Joe Rossell.

+ Alan Forehand wins Bob Scott Award
Alan Forehand, a senior middie for the Matanzas Pirates lacrosse team, was the recipient Sunday night of the inaugural Bob Scott Award, at the North Florida Lacrosse Awards.

The award is not for on-the-field performance. It recognizes a player whose leadership, effort and commitment to the sport is beyond that of a typical player.

Fewer than 100 players will receive this award across the country, according to Matanzas coach Mike Jones.

+ FPC’s Wes Adams named lacrosse All-American
Wes Adams, a senior attackman for the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs lacrosse team, was named as a North Florida Lacrosse All-American Sunday night, in Jacksonville.

Adams is the first boys FPC player to receive the All-American honors since 2005, when Luke Russell was honored.

The award shows Adams is among the best in the nation, according FPC coach Ryan Andrews. Adams is the vision and hustler for the Bulldogs, he added.

“Wes has been a key asset to our success since his freshman year,” Andrews said.

Adams has twice been named North Florida Lacrosse Player of the Week.

Aside from lacrosse, Adams is involved in Future Problem Solvers, Community Problem Solvers and has a 3.51 unweighted GPA.

This season, Adams has scored 30 goals, tallied 41 assists and scooped up 53 ground balls.

“Not only is he a great lacrosse player, but he’s also a tremendous kid off the field, and it really has been an honor to coach him,” Andrews said.
