The finish line isn’t here: Hannah Loder, Cameron Allen sign letters to run in college
Hannah Loder and Cameron Allen, two of Matanzas’ top runners over the last four years, officially signed their letters of intent Feb. 15 to run at the next level.
Loder will run at the University of South Florida, an NCAA Division I school that competes in the Big East Conference. USF is located in Tampa.
Allen will run at Troy University, an NCAA Division I school that competes in the Sun Belt Conference. Troy University is located in Troy, Ala.
Matanzas coach James Wolfe said both Loder and Allen set the bar for expectations for running at Matanzas.
“It isn’t possible to explain how grateful I am for Hannah and Cameron’s contributions to our program during their time here,” Wolfe said. Through their leadership, their work ethic, and their responsibility, they have made clear what is expected of the members of the Matanzas (cross-country and track teams).
“I feel so incredibly blessed to have been able to coach two phenomenal athletes who are both going to do great things during their college careers, great things that will go far beyond the scope of athletics. USF and Troy are getting two great individuals, and I couldn’t possibly be more proud of Hannah and Cameron.”
FPC, Matanzas wrestlers end season at states
All four area wrestlers who advanced to the state finals lost were eliminated on Friday — the first day of competition.
From FPC, Alfred Shavers (113 pounds) got a pin in the first round. Then, in the second round, Shavers was pinned. In the consolation bracket, Shavers lost in his third match via a decision.
Jake Kosachiner (120 pounds) also won his first matchup with a pin. He then lost his next two matches by decision.
From Matanzas, James Rumph (220 pounds) lost his first match after getting pinned. Rumph responded and won his second match with a pin, but he was ultimately eliminated in his third match on a decision.
Steven Moseley (285 pounds) also lost his first match after getting pinned. He followed Rumph’s path and won his second match with a pin but was eliminated after losing in the third match on a decision.
Shavers and Kosachiner are sophomores and will return next season. Rumph and Moseley are both seniors.
Lady Pirates pick up district softball win over Nease
In the first district game of the season, the Matanzas Lady Pirates softball team knocked off Nease, 7-1, on Friday.
Matanzas (3-1) scored three runs in the third inning and another three runs in the fourth.
Amber Johnson was the winning pitcher, who tallied five strikeouts over seven innings, allowing just six hits.
Christina Reynolds went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Morgan Lambert also went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Catcher Gabrielle Pricket went 2-for-4 with two singles.
St. Elizabeth track-and-field team wins third title in four years; girls take second
The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School boys track-and-field team won the grade-school track-and-field championships Feb. 8, which was hosted by Bishop Snyder High School, in Jacksonville.
This marks the third title in the last four years for the SEAS Knights. The team won the title in 2010 and 2011.
Emmanuel Adeniji took three individual events. He won the 400 meters, the shot put and the discus throw.
Sean Snyder placed second in the 800 meters, third in the 1,600 meters and also ran on the 4x400-meter relay team, which placed second.
Other standout competitors who earned ribbons include Antonio Kes, Daniel Leonard, Liam Dineen, Giovanni Barbosa and Dougie Gray.
St. Elizabeth outscored second-place finisher St. Michael’s Academy, 158-76.
The girls team took second place in the championship.
Individual winners were Jennifer Harshman in the 100-meter dash; Andrea White in the shot put and discus throw; and Morgan Sharman in the long jump.
The 4x100-meter relay team, comprising Jennifer Harshman, Morgan Sharman, Rose Riley and Natalie Alvarez, also took first place.
Byranna Pado and Sophia Alvarez also had outstanding meets for the girls.
The Knights are coached by Jody Marolf and Ryan Price.
“Our teams did a fantastic job,” Marolf said. “We have a young team, and we only had a month to prepare for the meet because many of our runners were still playing soccer. I was very impressed with the performance of our younger athletes. We will be tough to beat next season as we only lose four eighth-graders to graduation.”
Reynolds: Rotary Club’s Athlete of the Month
Christina Reynolds, a senior at Matanzas High School, has been named as the Rotary Club of Flagler’s Senior Scholar Athlete for February.
Reynolds is a member of the Lady Pirates softball team. She was also a captain on the girls golf team.
Off the field, Reynolds is the senior class vice president and is president of the National Honor Society. She also sings in the choir at Parkview Baptist Church.
She is also the secretary of the Matanzas High School Student Advisory Committee.
Reynolds hopes to pursue a career in diagnostic medical sonography.
Most recently, Reynolds went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs in the Lady Pirates district win over Nease.
