+ Matanzas boys basketball team loses in district semis
The Matanzas basketball team lost to top-seeded Nease, 59-45, Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the semifinals of the District 4-5A tournament.

The Pirates finished the season 8-18.

Junior Ivan Tsabak led the Pirates in scoring Tuesday night with 14 points. Imari Oxedine scored 10; Kurt Grimes had six points on two 3-pointers. Chris Johnson scored five.

+ After preseason no-hitter, Lady Pirates drop opener
In the Lady Pirates’ preseason game against Pierson Taylor, Amber Johnson threw her first no-hitter of her career. The Lady Pirates won the game, 10-0.

Matanzas lost its season-opener to Seabreeze, 4-0. Gabrielle Prickett was the losing pitcher.

Coach Sara Novak said the team struggled at the plate.

+ Matanzas boys tennis beats Ridgeview in singles, doubles
The Pirates started the season on the right foot, beating Ridgeview Thursday, 7-0.
