+ Matanzas boys soccer knocked out of districts
The Matanzas Pirates lost to Ponte Vedra, 2-1, Monday night, in the first round of the District 4-3A tournament.

The Pirates, who were the No. 8 seed, traveled to take on No. 2-seeded Ponte Vedra. Matanzas fell behind 1-0 on a corner kick late in the first half.

Then, with 10 minutes remaining in the game, Pirates freshman Nick Weber sent a ball into the box; the ball hit the hand of a Ponte Vedra defender. Eric LaVerne stepped in for the penalty kick. Ponte Vedra’s keeper made the initial save, but LaVerne finished the rebound, evening the score at 1-1.

However, with 25 seconds remaining in the game, a scrum took place near Matanzas’ goal. After a deflected shot, the ball fell to a Ponte Vedra attacker who scored, giving the Sharks a 2-1 win.

Matanzas finished the season 7-7-1, including five one-goal losses.

Matanzas coach Rich Weber said Ponte Vedra easily could be the best team in the district despite not being the top seed.

“Our boys grew up during this match and played like men against a big, strong, physical team,” Weber said. “I am very proud of their effort and commitment. I am heartbroken for them to lose in that fashion. However, I know they left it all on the field, which is all you can ask of them.”

+ Lady Pirates fall to Creekside in district semis
Matanzas lost to Creekside, 4-1, Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the semifinals of the District 4-3A tournament.

Creekside took a 2-0 lead during the first 10 minutes of the game.

Matanzas sophomore Gabbi Paiz scored on a penalty kick to cut the lead 2-1, but Creekside netted a goal minutes before halftime to take a 3-1 lead.

For the second half, Matanzas coach Tony Benvenuto switched the formation to a 4-3-3 to provide more attack.

“I wanted to see if we could score more goals, but we came up on the short end of it,” Benvenuto said after the game.

Creekside scored on a penalty kick late in the game to seal the win.

“I was hoping that as a team we could accomplish our goal of being .500 or better, and unfortunately we didn’t achieve that,” Benvenuto said.

The Lady Pirates (10-11-1) will lose a handful of seniors, Benvenuto added.

“But we do have some young kids coming in who can hopefully replace some of the losses we will have this year,” he said.
