+ Flagler Fusion takes second at state tourney
The Flagler Fusion U14 girls soccer team did something this past weekend that no other U14 team from Flagler County has done before.
Competing in the 2012 AYSO Florida State games, one of the largest soccer tournaments in Florida, the Fusion advanced to the championship game. The Fusion, however, lost in the finals to Okeechobee, 3-0.
This year’s tournament took place Jan. 13 to Jan. 16 at Village Park, in Wellington. More than 100 teams competed in age groups from U10 to U19, according to Fusion coaches.
The Flagler Fusion were able to participate in the tournament thanks to their sponsors, who are as follows: Palm Coast Ford, Publix, Walmart, Sears and Suntrust Bank.
Members of the team include Alexis Adams, Magan Kisner, Hana Boyer, Caitlynn Morse, Isabella Herrera, Kylie Dedeo, Vanessa Peterson, Maya Grussgott, Janessa Spina, Christa Lehane, Maria Foust, Adrianna Brandt and Amelia Panarelli.
+ Hodges, 11, advances to states in Elks Hoops Shoot
Hope Hodges is on a roll.
Hodges, 11, competed in the Palm Coast Elks Hoop Shoot Dec. 10, where she won her age division.
The Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest is open to boys and girls, ages 8 to 13. Contestants try to make as many free throws out of 25 as they can, while their competitors watch.
Hodges moved on to the next phase, which took place Jan. 7, in Stanford. Hodges won there, too.
Next up was the regional competition. It was no match. Hodges won the regional round, which took place Jan. 14, in Lake Placid.
Now, Hodges, a student at Belle Terre Elementary School, will compete in the state competition Feb. 18, in Umatilla.
For Hodges to win the overall title, she must complete three more phases.

Summer sign-ups for Flagler County Special Olympics will be 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at the Indian Trails Middle School gym, 5505 Belle Terre Parkway.

+ FPC boys basketball beats DeLand, improves to 17-2
The Flagler Palm Coast boys basketball team defeated DeLand, 51-48, Tuesday night. The Bulldogs (17-2) were led in scoring by Malik Maitland and Chris Lubin, who both dropped 10 points.
FPC closes out its district schedule 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Mandarin.
+ Coin flip to determine FPC boys soccer seeding
The fate for what seed the Flagler Palm Coast boys soccer team gets in next week’s district tournament will be in the hands of a coin.
FPC (10-2) beat Spruce Creek, 4-2, Dec. 13, to move into a tie for first in the district. The two teams are tied through all tiebreakers.
FPC ends regular season play 7 p.m. Friday, at Deltona.
