Lady Pirates soccer: 1-1
The Matanzas Lady Pirates soccer team began its season Monday with an 8-0 win over Palatka, a St. Johns River Athletic Conference win.

Gabbi Paiz drilled home four goals and notched two assists. Freshman Karen Rodriguez netted two goals and collected two assists. Michelle Dominguez and Jessica Casanova scored one goal apiece. Baley Pickering had two assists.

Freshman keeper Bella Benvenuto and junior Kelsey Lukes combined to get a shutout between the pipes.

Matanzas then lost to Spruce Creek, 3-1, on Tuesday night. Paiz scored the Lady Pirates’ lone goal off an assist from Abby Barker.

Matanzas missed several scoring opportunities in the first 15 minutes, which came back to haunt them, coach Tony Benvenuto said.

“(We) did not pass well, shoot well and did not defend well, and when all these things fail at the same time, it can only translate in a loss,” Benvenuto said.
