Flagler County residents who have old and unused prescription medications lying around in the cabinets will have the opportunity to dispose of those medications during the “Drug Take-back” event 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in several locations.

Residents are being asked to bring prescription medications only. Vitamins and other over-the-counter drugs are not being accepted.

The locations are Publix Supermarket in Flagler Beach; the Government Services Building in Bunnell; the Country Store in Daytona North; and in Palm Coast, the Publix Supermarket in the Palm Harbor Shopping Center, and the Walmart parking lot.

“We had a very positive community response when we did this a year ago, and we are looking forward to some very good participation this year," Sheriff Donald Fleming said in a statement. "We are making this easy. Several of these locations will be drive-thru drop-offs, so you don’t have to leave your vehicle."

The purpose of the program is to keep these prescription medications from re-entering the environment. Individuals often throw their medicine in the trash or flush them down the toilet, both of which are harmful to the environment. This program will also allow parents and grandparents to dispose of unused pain medications that may be abused by younger relatives.

The “Drug Take-back” program is being offered through a partnership with the U.S. Department Drug Enforcement Agency.
