The following is an adapted press release from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office:

Many Flagler County residents will be ringing in the New Year on Monday night with dinner, out and others will be attending holiday celebrations. The Sheriff’s Office wants everyone to arrive home safely, so deputies will be on the watch for impaired drivers as the New Year arrives.

DUI squads will be dispatched throughout the county on Dec. 31, as part of a nationwide 2012 Holiday Crackdown sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In 2010, 2,597 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes. Of that, 30%, or 775, involved an alcohol-impaired driver.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to avoid any loss of life to drunk drivers, and that is why the agency is participating in the special “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement effort.

Don’t drink and drive. Have a safe New Year.
