A civilian Sheriff’s Office employee, Nancy Birdsong, has been charged with falsifying her time sheets, according to a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Rick Staly received the allegations Feb. 14 and immediately ordered a criminal investigation that led to Birdsong’s arrest March 26 on a grand theft charge.
Birdsong, who worked at the courthouse as a Civilian Clerk III in the Civil Process and Fugitive Unit, was also suspended without pay pending an internal FCSO investigation. She’d worked for the Sheriff’s Office since July 1, 1998.
The investigation revealed questionable entries, discrepancies and omissions on Birdsong’s time sheet related to her use of time off to include sick time, vacation leave, personal leave, comp time and the use of FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) time. Her time sheets indicated that she was at work on days that she did not work, according to the news release.
The agency uncovered the issued after Birdsong’s supervisor, Sgt. John Bray, was reassigned to another unit and her interim supervisor, Cmdr. Brian Pasquariello, reviewed time sheets submitted by courthouse personnel.
A sheriff’s investigator determined that Birdsong had been unlawfully paid $1,577.61 because of fraudulent time sheet entries, and the State Attorney’s Office filed a charge of grand theft.
“It is disappointing that an employee was stealing from the taxpayers and tarnishing the good reputation of the many dedicated and hardworking employees that serve this community with integrity every day,” Staly said. “Criminal activity will not be tolerated regardless of who the suspect is or where they work. We will be asking for full restitution as part of the sentence.”
