Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 35-year-old man Dec. 22 after they caught him driving a stolen car. The man was also driving on a suspended license and in possession of cocaine.
Deputies had responded to a “Be-On-The-Lookout” alert for a white Grand Prix that was reported stolen from Volusia County.
They saw a car matching that description traveling north on U.S. 1 and conducted a felony traffic stop on Commerce Boulevard. The occupants were asked to exit the vehicle, and complied.
Deputies found that the driver did not have a valid driver’s license. He said he did not know his license was suspended.
He also told deputies that the car belonged to a friend of his fiancée and that he did not know it was stolen.
He told deputies he'd received the car on Sunday, Dec. 19, or Monday, Dec. 20, to do some repairs and conduct an oil change.
Deputies made contact with the registered owner of the vehicle, who said he did not know the driver.
Deputies secured the driver. At the jail, they found a small plastic baggie with 0.2 grams of white powdery residue in his left sock, and a short blue straw with a white powdery substance in his right sock.
The baggie and straw both tested positive for cocaine.
“Another criminal made the mistake of coming to Flagler County,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “... I would like to remind criminals: Do not bring stolen vehicles or your poison into Flagler County, because we will find you and you will be taken to the Green Roof Inn.”
The driver was arrested for Introduction of Contraband, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle and was taken to the county jail.
The passenger was released without charges.
