At least five domestic disputes turned physical in Flagler County over the weekend of June 10, and Sheriff Rick Staly is proposing a a task force and Domestic Violence Summit to address the issue.

On the afternoon of Saturday, June 10, a verbal dispute between three sisters turned physical when one sister struck the other in the eye with a lanyard, causing a small laceration and a large welt to the eyelid. Brielle Deacon, 19, was arrested for battery domestic violence.

Saturday evening, Kristy Priotti, 33, was arrested for battery domestic violence after biting her brother during a dispute over Kristy’s ability to care for her infant daughter.

Sunday evening involved another physical altercation between sisters. In this incident, Mary Carroll, 43, was arrested for violently shaking her sister which resulted in bruising to the arms.

Two additional domestic situations took place over the weekend, both involving stabbings. On Saturday afternoon, a 9-1-1 call came from a man reporting a knife wound to his chest. When deputies arrived, the victim was breathing but not responding to deputies. He was airlifted to Halifax hospital in Daytona Beach in critical condition. Early Sunday morning, a separate stabbing incident was reported by Florida Hospital Flagler when a subject entered the emergency room with a stab wound to his back. He was transported by ground to Halifax hospital as a trauma patient. No arrests have been made in these two incidents as they are currently being treated as active criminal investigations.

Legal Dictionary defines domestic violence as any abusive, violent, coercive, forceful, or threatening act or word inflicted by one member of a family or household to another.

These incidents highlight Sheriff Rick Staly’s initiative to launch a Domestic Violence Task Force comprising of local citizens, members of the judicial system, social service agencies, and government representatives. The first Domestic Violence Summit is scheduled for June 28.

“Domestic violence is a chronic crisis in Flagler County and we need to find a community-driven solution,” Staly said in a press release. “Yes, we need strong prosecution of domestic violence perpetrators even when a victim is reluctant, but we also need the community to come together and say ‘this is unacceptable behavior and here are the ways we can work to fix it.’”

In addition to the incidents listed above, FCSO deputies responded to another 12 domestic disturbance calls over the weekend that did not rise to a violation of the law. In these incidents, the disputes were resolved with intervention from FCSO deputies.
