Sharpening our pencils after two goofs in a row, Observer crossword returns

Dozens of calls and emails reminded us how much people love the puzzle. Enjoy two crosswords on Feb. 10.

Placing this week’s crossword puzzle in the Palm Coast Observer was a bit like carrying the Olympic torch; we were prepared to cross rivers, to run through rain and snow, if need be, to make sure the crossword arrived safe and sound to warm the hearts of our readers.

The past two weeks had been sloppy: In the Jan. 27 edition, the answers and puzzle didn’t match; in the Feb. 3 edition, we published Page 19 twice instead of the crossword on Page 20. (Since our first edition in 2010, we have never done such a thing. Oops!)

Our readers noticed. Bonnie Hamilton fielded about 20 emails, calls, or office visits at the front desk; in response, she emailed or snail-mailed a copy of the missed puzzle to everyone who wanted it.

I also received several emails. One reader said simply, “We are all frustrated.” One suggested: “Given a choice, I would prefer to have the crossword rather than just the answers.” Fair enough.

We also got some praise for the puzzle: “Your crosswords aren’t half bad,” one reader said; another: “I savor it.” Others said it’s “an escape” that “gladdens the day.”

Whew! We made it. This week, you will find not one but two puzzles, stacked on Page 25 (with answers on Public Notices and Red Pages). Thank you for patience and for reminding me that, indeed, our readers are paying close attention.
