Musical groups performed in honor of Flagler Schools’ 50 retiring employees, at a June 7 School Board meeting. Each retiree was individually recognized.

Grades are in, the School Board has closed its books on the 2010-2011 year, and summer is here. But for 50 Flagler Schools employees, there won’t be a next semester.

“Once a teacher, always a teacher,” said Flagler Schools Human Resources Director Harriett Holiday.

She went on to announce the names of every retiree, one by one, often stopping to describe traits about workers that she’ll especially miss next year when they’re gone and “off living the good life.”

Each employee was called to the front of School Board Chambers to be recognized and to take a picture with Superintendent Janet Valentine and School Board Chairwoman Sue Dickinson. Then, a choral troupe performed “Jersey Boys,” and groups from the Youth Strings Orchestra Program put on a mini-concert.

Holiday noted that several retirees still work in the school system, citing Jack Jeffe, former band leader who now has a personal service contract with the Strings Program.

“I think it’s absolutely amazing to look at those who have given their entire lives to public service,” School Board member Colleen Conklin said.
