Flagler Palm Coast High School and Matanzas High School joined together Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3, to co-host the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit.
The competition served as the state competition for color guard, indoor marching percussion and concert percussion units.
“Color guard and drumline are often referred to as the ‘sport of the arts’ because of the athletic rigor and artistic design of the performances,” said Sherrie Knob, Matanzas color guard coach.
Fifty-four Flagler County students make up the three local teams that competed over the weekend.
The Matanzas High School winter guard, which is in its fourth year of competition, finished 10th in its division with a contemporary arrangement of “America,” from “West Side Story.”
The Flagler Palm Coast winter guard, which is in its first full competition season, placed 13th with its performance, “Awakening Dreams.”
This was the first championship appearance in the team’s history.
The Matanzas drumline also competed at the championships. This was the third year of competition, but the first year to compete in the drumline class.
The drumline finished seventh in its division with a performance of “YYZ,” by the rock group, Rush.
“(We) came together to co-host the weekend-long event in a true spirit of sportsmanship and cooperation,” Knob said.
“It was a huge undertaking to host the more than 130 performing units that competed in 17 classes over both days, and these great students and their parents worked together, representing Flagler County schools positvely,” she said.
