The Flagler County School Board voted 4-1 Oct. 16 against selling a piece of property it owns off State Road A1A.
Board member Trevor Tucker was the only board member interested in considering a sale.
The board had received an inquiry from Dream Finders Homes’ Brian Small about buying the 20-acre parcel of vacant district land just north of Jungle Hut Road. The property is listed on the Flagler County Property Appraisers Office website as having an assessed value of $335,000.
The board doesn’t have immediate plans for the land.
At the meeting Oct. 16, board attorney Kristy Gavin said the land, which is marshy, would require a good deal of fill to be usable, and does not currently have water and sewer capacity.
The land was deeded to the school district from ITT in 1984. If the district does decide it’s interested in selling the building, Gavin said, the county government, under the agreement through which the school district received the land, would have the right of first refusal.
Board member Andy Dance said he didn’t envision the land becoming a good spot for a district facility. But, he said, “I just think the proper procedure on this, instead of responding to a specific claim, is for us to do our proper due diligence with regard to strategic planning on facilities, and I don't know that we've done that.”
