On the eve of the first day of school, the School Board approved a new start time for middle schools and amended the new dress code.

At a special meeting on the morning of Aug. 9, the board unanimously approved changing the start time for middle schools to 7:30 a.m.

In February, the board reluctantly moved up middle school start times to 7:20 a.m. to accommodate the high schools' new seven-period schedule. Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt informed the board last week that the transportation department said it can manage a 7:30 start time.

“It's a great idea. We're moving in the right direction,” board member Colleen Conklin said after the board approved the change.

The board also unanimously approved an amendment to the dress code, allowing graphic arts on upper attire in secondary schools. Graphic arts on shirts were already approved for elementary school students.

Conklin thanked John Fanelli, the district’s coordinator of student supports and behavior, for bringing in deans at a board workshop last week to show support for the amendment. Conklin said news of the change has been appreciated by the public. Board member Janet McDonald agreed.

“Everybody at the Back to School Jam were very happy about it as well,” McDonald said.
