Richard Waite Thompson
1941-2021

Richard Waite Thompson, 80, of Palm Coast, Florida passed away peacefully at home on October 6th, 2021. He was born in New York City on May 7, 1941.

Richard graduated from Rutgers University in 1963 and obtained his doctorate in Health Administration Services at The University of Iowa in 1969.

He began his teaching career in hospital administration at University of Alabama in Birmingham in the School of Health Services Administration. Richard joined the private sector so he could put into practice his ideals and beliefs of his teaching. He served in senior leadership at Alabama Hospital Association. He brought his passion for helping others to South Dakota where he joined Avera PACE as senior Vice President until his retirement. In his free time Richard loved playing golf with his friends and watching college football where he was a devoted fan of Auburn University and The University of Alabama.

He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Shari Dawn Thompson and his 7 children: Bridget (Barry), Tim (Renee), Todd (Susan), Kristi (Fred), Brandi (Spain), Jordan (Tracy), Jeremy (Blanca); 15 grandchildren with twins on the way as well as 3 great-grandchildren and one on the way. Richard thrived in the presence of his large blended family.

He is survived by his first wife Suzzane Thompson and second wife Amelia Thompson who also filled his life with love and enduring friendship. Richard is survived by his brother Phil (Louisa) and was preceded in death by his sister Shirley, brother Chuck and younger sister Katie.

His gift was giving to his church and community and was loved by many people throughout his life.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
