Palm Coast will gain a chunk of land, slated for commercial development near the airport, that is currently under the county's jurisdiction.
An agreement between the city an the county, approved by the City Council at its Nov. 20 meeting, provides for the annexation of the plot of land, called Airport Commons, into the city.
"I think it's a good agreement for all parties," interim City Manager Beau Falgout told council members before the vote. "For us, this agreement provides City Council's direction to try to reach an agreement with the parties rather than go through litigation, and also that we maintain the city's transportation impact fees and also requirement to annex to connect to our water system."
The land, which will contain a shopping center with restaurants, a fitness center and retail, was a source of contention between officials in the two local governments because although it is county-jurisdiction land, the plot is within the city's water service area, and development could not proceed without the city's agreement to provide water and sewer.
The city wanted to annex the land in order to provide water and sewer services, wanted the developer to pay impact fees or undertake road improvements, and wanted the development built to city of Palm Coast, rather than Flagler County, standards.
Palm Coast is getting what it wants under the new agreement: The land will enter the city's utility agreement before annexation, the developer will make road improvements on Aviation Drive and State Road 100 or pay transportation impact fees, and the developer agreed to modify the buildings at the city's request in order to meet city standards and add architectural interest.
The City Council approved the agreement unanimously.
Palm Coast's City Council proclaimed Small Business Saturday during its Nov. 20 meeting. Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 and is celebrated on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, falling this year on Saturday Nov. 24.
"Shopping local ... not only supports local business in your community that employs people locally, but the money stays here," Mayor Milissa Holland said. "And so we are trying to actively inform our residents on why it's so critical. The dollars that come back to our community between sales tax and fuels tax allows us to add infrastructure projects and improvements in your community. So, you are reinvesting in your community overtime you shop local."
The Palm Coast Yacht Club will hold its Boat Parade Day on Saturday, Dec. 15, this year. The parade of lighted boats will depart from Cimarron Basin at 6 p.m., heading down the Intracoastal, according to a proclamation presented at the Nov. 20 Palm Coast City Council meeting.
The club has held the parade for 36 years.
This year, the parade will be broadcast live, with KOOL 100.9 FM presenting a mix of holiday music and live commentary, according to the proclamation.
Boats from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, Tow Boat U.S., the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Palm Coast Auxiliary of the U.S. Coast Guard will escort the parade.
