Two-by-two, members of the royal court were announced Saturday, Dec. 1, at the annual Renaissance Christmas Ball, held at the Portuguese American Cultural Center, which had been transformed into the Jolly Dragon Tavern. Clothed in traditional, handsewn Renaissance garb, attendees made a grand entrance, until finally Queen Ophelia and King Anthony made their way to the head table.

The ball sold 150 tickets, making it the biggest event yet.

This is the third year that this tongue-in-cheek revival of a 16th century European royal banquet and ball has been held. It was the work of five friends: Jane Vales, Socorro Lauren, Cristin Sheynon, Aida Seguritan and Pauline Reynolds, who all were eager to offer the community a unique way to celebrate the holiday. Sheynon worked with the group and Norma Meeks to sew 56 costumes over the past three years, this year adding 20 dresses to the costume closet.
