The Matanzas Pirates and the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs are contemplating two words that begin with the letter “r”, for separate reasons, as they gear up for the most anticipated rematch in Flagler County sports history: revenge and repeat.
After a decade of repeated drubbing from their crosstown rivals, the Pirates got their long-awaited win last season, and they made sure the county knew it, by making T-Shirts that read “County Champs.”
If you ask them what they expect will happen this Friday, no one’s shying away from the moment.
“Walk the Dog!” Philip Moultrie emphatically stated. “That's what we’re going to do. They think last season was a fluke.”
On the other side, there were very few dry eyes in the losing locker room last year. The Bulldogs felt like they failed the school and the football program. But, according to receiver Anfernee Brown, the past is the past, and that includes Matanzas’ reign as country champs.
“We’re going to come out strong, play together as a team and do them just like we did Gainesville,” Brown said. Brown says he believes the Bulldogs will win 35-0, the same score Pirates’ Dan Leonard gave me, except with Matanzas winning. Both teams can’t be right.
The Bulldogs and Pirates will clash at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Matanzas.

In case you missed them: FPC won its kickoff classic game against Gainesville 21-17. Que’Shaun Byrd scored all three touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
Matanzas lost its game to Clay 35-7. Mackenzy Wagner scored the Pirates sole touchdown.
