The unemployment rate in the Center for Business Excellence region of Flagler and Volusia counties was 6.3% in December 2013, 2.1% lower than the region’s unemployment rate one year ago.
Flagler County’s unemployment rate was 8.8%. Volusia County’s unemployment rate was 6%.
Florida’s unemployment rate was .4% lower than the region’s, at 5.9%. Out of a regional labor force of 282,236, 17,887 residents were recorded as unemployed in the same time frame.
Nonagricultural employment in the Palm Coast metro area (Flagler County) was 19,700 in December 2013 — down 600 jobs (or 3%) over the year.
No major industries in this area gained jobs over the year.
Nonagricultural employment in the Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach metro area (Volusia County) was 159,700 in December 2013, up 1,400 jobs (or 9%) over the year. Statewide employment increased by 2.6% over the same time period.
Five of the ten major industries in this area gained jobs over the year, led by leisure and hospitality (600 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities and manufacturing (400 jobs each); and mining, logging, and construction, and professional and business services (300 jobs each).
Employment in manufacturing (a 4.7% growth) and leisure and hospitality (2.7% growth) grew faster in the metro area than in the state.
